Android Nougat is now running on nearly 7.1 percent active smartphones powered by Google's mobile operating system. The distribution of Android Nougat has steadily grown in the past month with Android 7.0 Nougat being used by 6.6 percent users and Android 7.1 Nougat reaching 0.5 percent users. The new data is based on an updated Android Dashboard which shows Android user base based on data collected during a 7-day period ending on May 2, 2017.

Android Nougat has basically grown by over 2 percent in the past month alone from 4.9 percent reported in April. It is worth noting that the distribution shows similar growth last month by growing from 2.8 percent in March to 4.9 percent in April. The major reason for this growth could be the launch of new devices running Nougat and rollout of Nougat update to older devices like Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S7 series. The data also reveals that 32 percent users are still running Android 5.0 Lollipop while 31.2 percent smartphones are running Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Android 4.4 KitKat commands a userbase of 18.8 percent, more than double of Nougat's market share while older versions like Android Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread are still powering 9.1 percent, 0.8 percent and 1 percent devices. In contrast, Apple's latest iOS 10 is installed on 79 percent active devices while iOS 9 is being used by 16 percent users. Apple's App Store distribution numbers reveal that previous versions are in use on less than 5 percent devices.

To recall, Android 7.0 Nougat was announced as a beta software for select Nexus devices on March 9, 2016. The software was officially rolled out as an OTA update for Nexus devices on August 22, 2016, and LG V20 was the first device to launch with the new software out of the box. Google then unveiled Android 7.1 Nougat with the launch of its Pixel range of smartphones. Google recently started the rollout of Android 7.1.2 for Pixel and Nexus range of smart devices.

For years, Google's major problem with Android has been its fragmentation with most users missing out on the latest release. With Android Nougat's share steadily increasing over its predecessors, Google might be hoping to break the jinx and achieve double-digit shares next month. Google recently announced Android O Developer Preview with the goal of helping developers and OEMs develop their own iterations closer to the official rollout.
