If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Apple will replace the Intel chips in Macs with their own chipset in 2020. A Bloomberg report reads, “The initiative, code named Kalamata, is still in the early developmental stages, but comes as part of a larger strategy to make all of Apple’s devices -- including Macs, iPhones, and iPads -- work more similarly and seamlessly together, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The project, which executives have approved, will likely result in a multi-step transition”.
Apple shifted from its proprietary chipset to Intel back at WWDC 2005. Apple has used its own T2 chip in the new iMac Pro and has announced that it would be making its own GPUs. Apple has reportedly been working on a cross platform software solution to allow developers to write apps for seamless use across OSX and iOS. Maybe the new hardware could make this process easier or be the key solution?
According to 9to5Mac, “Intel share have dropped just over 8% on the news. The report mentions that Apple orders account for roughly 5% of Intel’s revenue. Even though that may seem like a small proportion, today’s news has brought the largest drop that INTC has seen in the last two years”.
Apple uses custom chipsets in its iOS devices that includes the iPhone and the iPad. Apple’s custom chips also power the Apple TV. It will be interesting to see how Apple takes this new hardware forward.
Apple recently announced a new 9.7-inch iPad. The highlight of the device is the fact that it is compatible with the Apple Pencil, a feature that was previously reserved for the Pro family of the iPad. You can check out our comparison between the 2018 and 2017 9.7-inch iPad here.
