Will Nokia 7.1 impress with a sturdy make, mid-range specs and pure Android finish? Here’s what we know so far
HIGHLIGHTS

HMD Global is hosting a launch event in London at 5PM today, which is 9.30PM in India, and the Nokia 7.1 is expected to be unveiled there for an approximate price of 349 Euros (Rs 29,000 directly converted).

HMD Global is all set to launch the Nokia 7.1 today, or at least that's what we expect from all the rumours and leaks going around the web. The Nokia 7.1 will succeed the Nokia 7 Plus as a mid-range device with a stock Android experience. We are speculating so because all previous Nokia devices launched by HMD Global have had the Android One certification and given the company's close relationship with Google, it is unlikely that we'll see a deviation from this strategy. HMD Global is hosting an event in London at 5PM British Time (9.30PM IST) where the Nokia 7.1 is expected to become official. The event will be livestreamed on company’s official YouTube channel and the video for the same is embedded below for your convenience. Separately, the Finnish company has also sent out media invites in India for an October 11 event in New Delhi, but as per our sources, and contrary to most reports circulating the web, this event is NOT for the launch of the Nokia 7.1 in India.

When it comes to leaks, the Nokia 7.1 or what was earlier thought to be the Nokia 7.1 Plus, will be a mid-range device sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, also found on the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Moto One Power and even the Nokia 6.1 Plus. It is expected to sport a notch atop a 5.84-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display with a standard 19:9 aspect ratio. The phone could be paired with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, complemented with a 32GB or 64GB local storage. Both variants are said to have support for expandable storage. Where the upgrade comes in is the camera department of the phone. The price and specifications of theNokia 7.1 leaked just yesterday and we now expect the smartphone to feature Zeiss lenses – a 12MP+5MP rear dual camera setup to capture more depth information. The previous Nokia 6.1 Plus and the Nokia 5.1 Plus skipped the Zeiss branding, and in our review we had noted the image quality isn’t as good as the Nokia 7 Plus (which had Zeiss-branded lenses). There is no information on the resolution of the front shooter. Another plus for the Nokia 7.1 could be its build quality. HMD Global has done a good job of building sturdy, good-looking devices and if the Nokia 7.1 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, marrying good design with quality cameras, then it could beat out its competition in the segment. However, only after today's launch will we be able to confirm the specs and how they fare in the mid-range market in India.

As per German tech website Winfuture.de, the smartphone will go on sale on October 22 in Europe and we expect it to come to India a little later. It is speculated that the Nokia 7.1 could be priced around 349 Euros (approx Rs 29,000) for the base variant and that the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant may cost buyers 400 Euros (which is approx Rs 33,000). These prices, if correct, could be lower for the Indian market given the competitive smartphone space we have here in the country.
