Google is now preparing to introduce the next major iteration of its mobile platform, Android 17 after the stable Android 16 rollout across Pixel devices and other Android devices. While Android 16 introduced several key updates, early access to Android 16 QPR betas and the Android 16 QPR1 stable build has offered a clear preview of what Android 17 may bring. Here’s everything that we know so far about the Android 17 release timeline, features and more.
SurveyAndroid 17 name and branding
Internal codenames are still in use even though Google abandoned names with dessert themes with Android 10. According to insiders, Android 17’s internal dessert codename is “Cinnamon Bun,” following Baklava in Android 16. Publicly, however, the platform will just be known as “Android 17.”
Android 17 release timeline
Based on Google’s current release timetables, the first Android 17 developer preview could arrive in November 2025. A stable release of Android 17 is expected in June 2026. However, these are just early leaks that have yet to be confirmed.
Android 17 confirmed features
Android 17 may include Material 3 Expressive, a UI revamp that is likely to include dynamic animations, revised icons and typography, background blur effects, and redesigned Google apps. It may include Desktop Mode, similar to Samsung DeX, as well as multitasking on external monitors with taskbars, resizable windows, and support for numerous applications. It could include Live Updates, which would provide real-time progress notifications in the Always-On Display, lock screen, status bar, and heads-up notifications.
Improved security features could include better Factory Reset Protection and Intrusion Logging, which would monitor device behaviour such as network connections, USB events, and app installations and securely store logs. Upgrades to productivity and usability may include customisable keyboard shortcuts and improved app adaptability for large screens, which necessitates apps supporting multiple window sizes and orientations.

It may also include Local Network Protection, which requires apps to request explicit permission to access local networks, as well as a complete UI redesign that includes changes to status bar icons, clock typefaces, notifications, Quick Settings, and lock screen layouts. Forced themed icons and a larger dark theme could improve system uniformity and accessibility, while lock screen widgets and Ambient AOD may return, along with blurred wallpaper support for Always-On Display.
The ability to control the HDR effect’s intensity through adjustable brightness could improve media experiences. Gemini-powered Notification “Magic Actions” that offer more intelligent, context-aware recommendations may be a feature in Android 17. Better Ultra-Wideband (UWB) compatibility for payments, access control, and transportation features, as well as 90:10 split-screen multitasking, may increase phone productivity and device functionality.
