Disney's streaming service will pluck out Marvel and Star Wars films from Netflix

It’s possible that series such as Marvel’s The Defenders will eventually move to Disney’s streaming service, leaving the Netflix platform altogether.

Disney’svstreaming service is slowly nearing reality and it already looks to be tough competition for the likes of Netflix, even before it has an official name. As per Disney CEO Bob Iger, Marvel and Star Wars films and TV franchises will change homes and move out of Netflix for good starting 2019.

The information was revealed by Iger at a media conference in LA on Thursday. Disney’s streaming service is set to launch in 2019 and will offer original Disney movie productions, Marvel movies, Star Wars franchise, and Pixar films. Disney will stream Marvel and Star Wars content exclusively and no other service will house the same.

All the original Marvel TV shows on Netflix, including Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, etc will remain on the platform. However, reports suggest that as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Defenders might move to Disney. Looks like Netflix has one more year to work with the sequel to The Defenders, but we don’t know how this latest development will affect the continuation of the superhero series on the platform. We are expecting a season 2 for Luke Cage and a third season for Daredevil to hit Netflix in 2018.

Netflix will continue to stream Star Wars and Marvel movies until the end of 2018 and some older titles will stay put on the service till the end of 2020.

"As with Disney films, US Netflix members will have access to Marvel and Star Wars films on the service through the end of 2019 and 2020 in many cases," a Netflix spokesman told CNET in a statement. "This includes all new films shown theatrically through the end of 2018."
