Tata Motors hit the headlines when it unveiled two new concept cars at the 2018 Auto Expo. The company is looking to offer more premium experiences to its customers in future, and the new concepts - the H5X SUV and the 45X concept were both aimed at offering better powertrain, interior quality, features and overall exterior design. Now, we have a timeline in hand. Mayank Pareek, President of Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business, stated in an interview with The Times of India that both the cars will be launched next year, with the H5X lined up for early 2019, and the 45X to follow suit soon after that in Q2 2019.

Pareek also stated that Tata Motors is looking to fill in the voids in its portfolio where it does not have a product. As a result, it will be targeting segments like the premium hatchback market, mid-size and full-size sedans as well as premium SUVs for its upcoming car launches. By 2021, the company aims to have a product in at least 90 percent of all the car segments in the country. The Tata H5X SUV is being based on Tata Motors' subsidiary Land Rover's OMEGA (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced) architecture, but will be slightly tweaked to form the company's new OMEGA-ARC platform. For reference, the OMEGA platform presently underpins cars like the Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar E-Pace. The production model of the H5X SUV is touted to be powered by a Fiat-sourced MultiJet II engine, which will reportedly be paired with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions, and produce 140bhp in the 5-seater variant and the 170bhp in the 7-seater variant. The exterior will be based on Tata's Impact Design 2.0 styling language, and we also expect to see updated interior equipment list. Reports indicate that the Tata H5X SUV will be priced within Rs. 15 lac, and the 5-seater variant is expected to launch first. When launched, the H5X will be up against the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, the new Mahindra XUV500 and the likes.

The Tata 45X will also carry the Impact Design 2.0 philosophy forward, and have similar interiors in tune with how Tata wants to design its cars over the next two years. Not much has been revealed about this one yet, but we do expect to see an updated version of the new ConnectNext interface that we've seen in the sub-compact SUV, the Tata Nexon. The Tata 45X will face stiff competition in a segment that has massive popular cars like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo as equally compelling options. Tata Motors has always held its reputation in terms of providing excellent interior space, but questions have often risen in terms of the overall interior quality that the company's cars provide. With the new crop of cars, this is what Tata Motors will be looking to address first.

Tata Motors also unveiled the EVision concept sedan at the Geneva Motor Show, which showed a glimpse at the type of premium designs that the company intends to work on. Hopefully, we will get to hear more about the company's first all-electric passenger vehicle too, now that word is out about production timelines of the company's new generation of cars.
