Maruti Suzuki Ignis launched onward of Rs. 4.59 lac with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and more
  • The Maruti Suzuki Ignis compact crossover will go up against the likes of Mahindra KUV100 and more.

Maruti Suzuki has launched the Ignis compact crossover in India at Rs. 4.59 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).  The Ignis will be the third car that will be retailed by the company’s Nexa dealerships, after the S-Cross and Baleno, and will go up against the Mahindra KUV100, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Swift.

As the KUV100, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis looks like a mini-SUV. The front fascia is sporty and aggressive and the projector headlamps with U-shape LED DRLs look quite interesting. The rear looks a bit awkward, but Maruti Suzuki has still attempted to make it look smooth and affable.

Move inside, and the cabin feels upmarket with a dual-tone dashboard, and the technology inside includes touchscreen infotainment unit, automatic climate control and support for MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Ignis is based on the same platform that also underpins the Baleno and the next-generation Swift. This architecture makes heavy use of high-tensile steel to increase the torsional rigidity and reduce weight.

No variant of the Ignis weighs over 1,000kg, and one tips the scales at just 825 kg - 140kg lesser than the lightest Swift model on sale right now. Against the tape, the Ignis measures 3700mm in length, 1690mm in width and 1595mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2435mm. These numbers are similar to the Swift, but the Ignis gets more boot space (260 litres) and has a higher ground clearance (180mm) than its counterpart.

The car is available with one petrol engine and one diesel engine- both borrowed from the Baleno. The 1.2-litre petrol unit produces 83hp at 6000rpm and 113Nm of torque at 4200rpm, all the while returning a mileage of 20.6km/l. Meanwhile, the 1.3-litre diesel generates 75hp power and 190Nm of torque, and delivers an economy of 26.8km/l. Both the engines can be opted with a five-speed manual or automatic gearboxes, which direct the power to the front wheels (globally, Ignis is also sold with a 4WD system).

For the suspension, the Ignis gets McPherson struts at the front and torsion beam setup on the rear. The steering is electronic and has a turning radius of 4.7m. Meanwhile, there are disc brakes up front and drums at the back, going along with 15-inch rims wrapped in 175/65 tyres. Standard safety features include two front airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking system), EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Maruti Ignis petrol prices (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Sigma M/T - Rs 4.59 lakh
Delta M/T - Rs 5.19 lakh
Delta AMT - Rs 5.74 lakh
Zeta M/T - Rs 5.75 lakh
Zeta AMT - Rs 6.30 lakh
Alpha M/T - Rs 6.69 lakh
