Hyundai has launched the Hyundai Kona in India. The car is a fully electric SUV, launched at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 25.30 lakh. The new vehicle is touted to be India’s first fully electric SUV, which is claimed to deliver a range of up to 452 kilometers per charge. In terms of design, Hyundai Kona looks similar to the standard, conventional variant but here, the front grill features intaglio patterns and the exhaust is, unsurprisingly, missing. The SUV has been announced in Phantom Black, Polar White, Marina Blue, Typhoon Silver and Polar white with Phantom Black Roof colour models.

Moving on to the tech inside Hyundai Kona, it comes equipped with an on-board charger that supports 7.2 kW rate of charge. As mentioned earlier, the car is ARAI certified to deliver about 452 kms of range per charge and the company claims that its 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery can be topped up to 80 percent in 57 minutes using a DC quick charger that draws in 50 kW power with the CCS Type II charging port. The charging port is housed in the front grille area. The SUV offers four different driving modes to choose from, including Eco+, Eco, Comfort and Sport. As expected, the Sport mode will deliver better acceleration while Eco+ and Eco modes are meant to conserve power and extend battery life. The 136ps permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor is touted to help the SUV attain 100kmph speeds in 9.7 seconds.

The infotainment system consists of a 7-inch display and it supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well. The infotainment system supports AM/FM/MP3, voice recognition, aux input, and also acts as a rear-view monitor. The SUV also comes equipped with a wireless charging interface to wirelessly charge compatible devices such as phones and headphones. The company will supply two car chargers with the car, one portable and another being an AC Wall Box Charger.

The Portable charger is compatible with any standard 3 Pin, 15 Amp socket and is said to top 50Kms of range in less than three hours. The 7.2 kW AC Wall Box charger is touted to top-up the vehicle under one hour for running 50 kms. As for developing charging stations, Hyundai is partnering with IOCL to enable at select fuel Stations in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. These chargers are said to top up the SUV’s battery to 80 percent capacity in under an hour.

In select cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, a Special Kona Electric fleet equipped with power converter will provide emergency charging support to customers. In addition, HMIL has tied up with MapMyIndia to display Kona Electric compatible EV Charging Stations in HMIL Website and in Mobile App. To entice consumers, the Kona Electric will be available with a three-year warranty and unlimited kilometers, along with eight years and up to 160,000 kilometers of warranty for the battery.
