YouTube has rolled out its Premium Lite subscription plan in India, giving users a cheaper way to enjoy ad-free video playback without paying for the full-fledged YouTube Premium bundle. The plan, priced at Rs 89 per month, offers the same benefits as YouTube’s Premium student plan. However, unlike the standard Premium subscription, it does not include YouTube Music, background play, or offline downloads.
Notably, YouTube Premium Lite was initially launched in the US in March 2025. It offers the same benefits as India at $7.99 (about Rs. 709) per month, making it significantly more expensive in the US.
Google, in its blog post, has shared that the price of the new YouTube Premium Lite in India is set at Rs. 89 per month, which is the same as the student plan for the Premium subscription. Additionally, the yearly YouTube Premium plan is priced at Rs. 1,490, whereas the Individual plan starts at Rs 149 per month. The Family plan, which allows for the addition of up to five members, costs Rs 299 per month, while the two-member plan costs Rs 219 per month.
The Premium Lite plan will provide ad-free playback on “most” videos across categories like gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and more. However, the platform hasn’t clarified what “most” means, leaving some uncertainty. On the other hand, a YouTube Premium subscription guarantees ad-free viewing across all content, along with extra features such as background play and offline downloads.

Premium Lite is a cheaper version that skips these perks and also excludes YouTube Music. The plan will work seamlessly across devices, including smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs. That said, YouTube notes that ads may still appear on music videos, Shorts, and while browsing or searching, making it a budget-friendly but limited alternative to Premium.
