Digit Verdict: OnePlus 9R Review

By Sushant Talwar

Starting at Rs 39,999, the OnePlus 9R is the new entry-level flagship from the company that looks to take the battle to the crucial sub Rs 40k segment of the market. And, it does so really well. The phone has plenty to like about it, including its fast 120Hz display, the above par cameras and also its premium design language. The only real issue that a OnePlus fan could have with the device is the presence of the Snapdragon 870 SoC -- instead of the flagship Snapdragon 888. Other than that, there's no reason to not consider the OnePlus 9R if you're looking for a new phone in this budget segment.

OnePlus 9R Brief Description

OnePlus has launched its latest phones, the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9R in India. The three phones are the latest flagships from the phone maker and have been launched to cover different price points of the premium segment of the smartphone market. Of these three, it is the OnePlus 9R that's the most affordable of the lot and stands as the company's new entry-level flagship. While it features slightly toned-down

specifications when compared to its more expensive siblings, the OnePlus 9R still remains a very powerful device, one which also brings with itself the promise of above-par camera performance and a premium design language.

OnePlus 9R: Price and availability

If you're looking to get your hands on a new OnePlus 9R, the phone can be bought for a starting price of Rs 39,999 for the 8GB+128GB variant and Rs 43,999 for the more expensive, 12GB+256GB storage option. The OnePlus 9R will go on sale from April 15 alongside the OnePlus 9 in the country. The phone is available in two colours, Lake Blue and Carbon Black.

OnePlus 9R: Video Review

OnePlus 9R: Design

The OnePlus 9R follows the same design language as the more expensive OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. As such, it can easily pass off for a device from a higher price segment. OnePlus has used glass and metal as the core elements for machining the OnePlus 9R. Its dimensions are 161 x 74.1 x 8.4 mm. The back of the OnePlus 9R uses a glass sheet that has the OnePlus logo plastered in the middle and a well-designed vertically placed camera set-up towards the upper right-hand corner of the back panel. This camera module houses four lenses and a dual flash.

OnePlus 9R: Display

For the OnePlus 9R, the display is definitely an area of focus. The device brings with itself a 6.55-inch FHD+ Fluid AMOLED display that can be set to either refresh at 60 or 120Hz. It is a non-curved display, which the company claims can go up to 1100nits at peak brightness. The OnePlus 9R comes with support for HDR10+. In our display test results, the OnePlus 9R running the Display P3 profile managed to achieve high colour accuracy. Calman's ColorChecker test results showed the panel managed an impressive Avg DeltaE error of 1 and a maximum DeltaE error of 2.06. As for coverage of the colour space, in this profile, the panel managed a high gamut coverage of 98.924 per cent of the DCI-P3 colour space.

OnePlus 9R: Specifications

The OnePlus 9R is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor which was announced earlier this year as a follow-up to the Snapdragon 865 series of chipsets. This chip has been fabricated using TSMC's 7nm process. For computing, there's a Qualcomm Kyro 585 CPU which features a prime core designed to clock a peak speed of up to 3.2GHz. There's also support for 5G. For graphics, the chipset relies on the Adreno 650 GPU. This chip is paired with up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB storage options to choose from. For software, we have Android 11 with OxygenOS 11 on top. The OnePlus 9R is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery that supports Warp Charge 65 fast charging out-of-the-box. This enables the OnePlus 9R to charge from 1-58% in 15 minutes and complete a full charge in about 45 minutes.

The overall performance of OnePlus 9R is quite snappy and is close enough to the results of the Snapdragon 888 totting OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. Connectivity options included on the OnePlus 9R are NFC, USB Type-C, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth v5.10, 3G, and 4G VoLTE.  Sensors included in the phone are an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, a compass/ magnetometer, a gyroscope, a proximity sensor, and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

OnePlus 9R: Cameras

OnePlus 9R does not come with Hasselblad branded cameras, however, it still features a powerful 4 lens camera set-up. The OnePlus 9R has quad cameras on the back headlined by a 48MP primary camera that uses Sony IMX586 sensor with OIS support, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 123-degree field-of-view, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP monochrome camera. There’s a 16MP selfie camera on the front, housed within the notch cutout.

  • Amazing - True Flagship
    Mohit MJ on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

My first time buying a OnePlus phone and I really like the finish of the one. Camera is excellent, Android 11 is very smooth to use, functions are fast. Just my first day of usage so hard to be critical of anything. The downside for me is that there is no place expand the memory.

    Aditya on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

I am writing down this after using for a couple of days. I got the carbon black one with 12GB RAM. Overall the device is good, and honestly is the reskin of one plus 8T with lower price

  • It's not a worthy mobile, it has camera and heating issue for this price it's not good
    Nethra on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

OnePlus 9r is best of both world that you get from samsung and apple. I would rate full 5 stars for mobile except camera and heating issue. Also, the delivery experience while exchanging mobile turned out to be worst. Hence rating overall 1star for the bad and worst humiliated experience. Now I'm afraid to order again from Amazon.

  • Wonderful phone for the price.
    Lokender Pilaniya on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

As I'm a OnePlus user for more than 4 years now I purchased the OnePlus Plus 9 Pro on 30th March and loved it. And got the 9R for my sister and she loved this phone. I would say it's better to get 9R over 9 else buy the 9 Pro. Camera on the 9R is not as people are saying that it's bad. It's decent for the price. A normal person can't tell the difference btw. Screen is beautiful, phone looks premium.

  • You won't go wrong choosing OnePlus 9R. A decent choice for 2021.
    Amal on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

An overall decent phone. The clean software experience would be the reason to choose this instead of Mi 11X or IQOO 7. Hardware wise it's more than capable. The camera I would say , is decent. It depends on your photography skills. The sensor specs only matter so much, I would say invest some time in learning photography. Check the photos attached. If you are a power user , this is one of the best value for money phones at this segment. For the custom rom folks , the kernel is open sourced, so in a year can expect decent ROM. I think IQOO bootloader is not unlocked so keep that in mind.

  • Not what I expected from OnePlus.
    Trailblazer on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

I just switched from OP6. Unlike when I brought the OP6, when I had zero complaints. I'm having many issues with the OP9R from day one. Things to note: 1. The display has some major issues, there's an off-axis pinkish tint to whites and grays, which is quite annoying, and almost all the devices seem to affected with this as per OnePlus forums. 2. The Camera are just mediocre, and I find the OP9 Camera much better than this. Even though OP9 lacks OIS, it almost always catches better pics and has better focus and stabilization in videos. Like MKBHD said, the Macro and Monochrome sensors are just garbage. 3. The whole of the phone, particularly the backplate vibrates on playing sounds, it's pretty annoying and makes the phone feel cheap. Good stuff: 1. Warp Charging is unbelievably fast. 2. Other than the off-axis color shift, it's a great display. 3. The phone is very snappy, added to the 120Hz display gives it a very confident smoothness. Overall: I think OnePlus put very little effort to this phone, as if they made it just to satisfy the Indian customers to complement the OnePlus 9 series. Their quality control seems to be quite bad, as OnePlus forums is full with issues with this device. I have a very unpopular suggestion, buy the OnePlus 9, it's only 7K more SBI Credit Card. You get a newer and efficient Chipset, a substantially better camera. Having OIS gives no seeming advantage to OnePlus 9.

  • A worthy upgrade
    Nithin VS on Amazon.in | 01-01-1970

I have been using Realme 2 pro for the past 2 and half years and I felt like I needed a upgrade and bought OnePlus 9R, have to say it's a worthy upgrade and the speed is amazing. Everything is super fast and 120hz refresh rate is cherry on the top. Camera is okaish nothing that great. There are some heating here and there while using apps. Battery is okay as well. If you are using heavily it will not last you for a day, with normal usage it will easily last for a day. Also the phone fully charges in 40 minutes thanks to the 65w fast charging. OxygenOs is good nothing that great. There are lots of booklets inside the box, I hope next time OnePlus reduce that and instead add a usb c to 3.5mm jack adaptor. This is the first time I am using a OnePlus phone and I am really enjoying every moment of it and I would recommend this phone to everyone who is planning on upgrading their phone.
