Exclusive: Reliance Jio in talks with HMD Global to launch Nokia...

Reliance Jio is constantly brewing new partnerships with smartphone makers and if industry sources are to be believed, the company is in talks with HMD Global to launch the 4G variant of the Nokia 3310 in India, bundled with data and calling offers.

Executives close to the development tell Digit that Reliance Jio and HMD Global have been brewing this partnership since some time, and that Jio is keen to exclusively bundle its services with the upgraded Nokia 3310.

The Nokia 3310 4G is expected to be announced soon. The device recently appeared on China’s TENAA certification website with model number TA-1077. HMD Global can be expected to unveil the 4G variant of the Nokia 3310 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, if not earlier.

Our source also tells us that HMD Global, the Nokia brand licensee, is looking to bring back some legacy Nokia devices such as the N-Gage and E72 with 4G connectivity. The specs of these legacy Nokia phones are of course expected to be upgraded to compete with current generation devices. Reliance Jio is also interested in being the carrier partner for these legacy Nokia devices and will be looking to offer bundled data and calling services with them when they launch in India.

There is no confirmation or details available on any special data plans that Jio might bring with the Nokia 3310 4G phone. Our source, however, tells us that Jio is likely to cease production and second round bookings for the JioPhone. The company might be looking to upgrade the smartphone and launch its second-gen variant.
