Users of Airtel’s unlimited prepaid plans will finally get to enjoy a ‘truly unlimited’ mobile internet experience as the telecom giant has reportedly started offering a throttled speed of 128kbps after completion of their daily data limit. According to a report by TelecomTalk, users can now continue to access the internet at this throttled speed for free until the next day’s data limit begins. For example, if the recharge plan has a daily data limit of 1.4GB and the user exhausts it before the day is over, they can continue to use internet at a speed of 128kbps for the rest of the day until the next day’s quota of 1.4GB begins.
As per the report, this upgrade in Airtel’s Fair Usage Policy (FUP) is akin to the policy offered by BSNL and Jio. However, it’s worth noting that while BSNL continues to offer a speed of 128kbps after the daily data limit, Jio has recently chosen to throttle it further to 64kbps. There is no word yet on whether Vodafone and Idea will upgrade their FUP to keep up with the competition.
This development is taking place about a month after Airtel decided to introduce a new Rs 249 prepaid plan, where the user could enjoy unlimited local and STD calls, 2GB of 4G data per day, and 100 SMS per day for a period of 28 days. Along with the Rs 249 plan, Airtel decided to refresh their existing Rs 349 plan by offering 3GB of 4G data per day, a data limit that has doubled in the last six months. The rest of the benefits in the Rs 349 plan match those of the Rs 249 plan.
