The Heliodisplay

Want to ogle Lara Croft’s curves in her latest avatar? In 3D detail at that? IO2Technology, a US-based firm, has come out with what it calls the Heliodisplay, and you can actually project Ms Croft into the air and look at her from all sides.

The Heliodisplay is a family of interactive tactile 3D displays that project a floating image in the air, similar to R2D2’s projector of Star Wars fame. There’s no need to turn off the lights either: the Heliodisplay was designed for operation in a well-lit environment.

On the performance end, M2i, the top-end model in the Heliodisplay family, creates an interactive 3D display in thin air using lasers. By interactive, we mean interactive. You can move the mouse pointer just like Tom Cruise does in Minority Report. No need for special gloves or pointing devices-drag the cursor just like you do on a touch-screen. The unit ships with a remote for couch potatoes who want to enjoy real 3D interactivity while being too lazy to stand up!

This mesmerising display generates 16.7 million colours and has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024. It can project a 30-inch display with an aspect ratio of 4:3. It can be hooked up to a PC, TV, DVD, HDTV, as well as your favourite video game consoles.

We’d recommend that all geeks get themselves one, but at $60,000, you’ll need to start your own Internet scam to be able to afford one!
