So, without further ado, let’s jump into the magical world of fantasy.

The Expanse

Not strictly a fantasy show, The Expanse is a sci-fi fantasy show that tells the story of a brewing war between Earth, Mars and the Belters )People who live and work mining precious materials from asteroids). The show has a very accurate scientific bent to it and almost everything on the show can be explained using physics. That’s one of the best aspects of the show. It also covers a lot of political intrigue and really digs deep into what it means to be a human in a post space travel world.

Another show that has really captivated fans all across the world, Supernatural is essentially a story about a family of demon hunters going about their jobs. Well, it’s not as simple as that but with 15 seasons done, it’s hard to really describe the show to a newbie. But trust us, it’s got all the demon-slaying you’ll need and really is about the bond between brothers Sam and Dean, out to find their father. It starts off a little slow but the latter seasons really get going.

Good Omens

Based on the novel by the late, great Terry Pratchett and the hack that is Neil Gaiman, Good Omens tells the tale of a demon called Crowley and an angel called Aziraphale as the two must work together to stop the apocalypse from taking place. Bitingly funny and with some great special effects, the show really retains the spirit of the novel and Prachett’s humour.

Another adaptation of a novel, NOS4A2 is fantasy horror at its best. A very distinct take on vampirism and the hero, the story is a grim fantasy tale that follows Charlie Manx as he feeds not on blood but souls of children. A slight warning, the show may be a bit difficult for some to watch but it’s a very well-told story that has been adapted from the novel by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. If you’re interested there’s a graphic novel out as well.

American Gods

Neil Gaiman keeps popping up on this list, doesn’t he? Anyway, American Gods is another adaptation of a novel of his but truth be told, it’s not a personal favourite. The show differs from the novel in that it’s a progressive fantasy show which means that the writers and showrunners have prioritised progressive talking points rather than actual storytelling, but don’t take my word for it. A word of warning, the show contains a lot of sexual situations, and a lot of cursing and violence so do beware.

Carnival Row

One of the newer shows on the platform, Carnival Row is an original Amazon Prime Video show that stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne. The show basically follows mythical creatures who have fled their war-torn homeland and gathered in the city as tensions are simmering between citizens and the growing immigrant population. With decent special effects and a great storyline, Carnival Row is a show that you should check out if you like a bit of dark fantasy.

Penny Dreadful

A cool take on classic movie monsters like Frankenstein’s monster and the Wolfman, Penny Dreadful is a true dark fantasy show. Starring Hollywood A-listers like Josh Hartnett and Eva Green along with a wonderful Timothy Dalton, the show is also quite violent and is not meant for children in any way. If you’re a fan of classic Universal monsters, you’ll love the vibe of this show.

Heroes really kicked off the superheroes on TV craze and although it was not based on any existing comic book, it managed to carve out its own identity and went on to become one of the most-watched shows on TV. The tale of the immortal cheerleader and the man who steals powers by consuming the brains of super-powered individuals, Heroes was way ahead of its time but sadly the show fizzled out by the second season. The first season though is pure quality.
