1. It was the first Hindi film to gross over INR 1 billion.
2. Aamir Khan was originally given the role of Prem, but he refused to act in the movie because he didn't find the script appealing. Salman Khan who was going through a bad career phase was then signed. The movie's massive success revived Salman Khan's career, which was originally doomed with successive flops.

4. Lata Mangeshkar, who sang more than 10 songs in the movie, had long retired from accepting awards, but the public demand for the song "Didi Tera Devar Deewana" was such that she received the Filmfare Special Award that year.

8. The film was originally released in only a small number of theaters that agreed to upgrade their facilities. 9. The music parts during the song "Joote Do Paise Lo", are the instrumentals of the songs, "Kabootar Ja Ja" and "Aja Sham Hone Ayi". Both these songs are from Sooraj Barjatiya's previous film "Maine Pyar Kiya".
10. Adjusted for inflation, this is one of the highest-grossing Bollywood movies of all time, with collections up to 134 cr, which today would equate to approximately 700 crores.

12. During the scripting of the film, Juhi Chawla asked Sooraj Barjatya if she could do the film. Sooraj replied that the casting was done and Madhuri was signed.

14. Rajesh Khanna was offered Alok Nath's role but declined it as he did not want to act.
15. Anupam Kher was suffering from facial paralysis at that time and shot the drunken act of Sholay to cover up for his sickness. 16. Barjayta's grandfather and the company founder Tarachand Barjatya, loved the song "Dhiktana" so much that the film was nearly given that title.
17. The bright purple jaded satin saree with a backless khidki-blouse that Madhuri Dixit draped in "Didi Tera Dewar Deewana" was reported to have cost Rs. 1.5 million (US$23,000).
18. Designed by Anna Singh, the saree that Dixit wore in "Didi Tera Dewar Deewana" was described as one of the "most talked about sarees" by both The Tribune and The Times of India.[18][19] It became popular and was made available for purchase in various shops around the world, with it selling in large numbers.
19. With the increasing appeal, the subsequent film's poster showed only Dixit in the purple saree whereas initially she was placed beside Khan.
