JBL Synchros Reflect: Detailed Review

The JBL Synchros Reflects are designed for a better fit by utilising a pair of flanges that help secure them firmly in your ears. They're named “Reflect” on account of the thin line of reflective paint that runs along the flat cable, supposedly enabling night time runners to be seen for safety. The headphones have got some other nifty features too like in-built magnets on the housings that stick the buds together when not in use.

The sound quality is certainly better than the JBL Synchros E10 and the Reflect’s sound signature is more balanced. It leans slightly closer to the neutral or flat response signature that we so dearly want. Personally the bass end dipped and the higher end of the spectrum enhanced is still a better tuning proposition than vice versa. Not surprising then that Pull Me Under by Dream Theater seemed harsh on the JBLs when compared to how it sounds on the Bose QC 20, which we use as an absolute reference. Cord harmonics was a problem but the nice little shirt clip takes care of it in a jiffy, so even when you’re running the cables don’t let any noise travel up. The build quality is quite good too.

In this emerging sports IEM segment, there aren’t too many options out there. There is the more expensive Audio-Technica ATH-CJX9 which seems slightly more refined and provides better isolation – but no magnetic housing or reflective cables. Another upgrade is the Sennheiser OCX 685i Sports but that may be out of your budget. All this makes the Synchros Reflect a worthy purchase if you’re looking for your next pair of in ear headphones to use while running or in the gym.
