After LG and Moto, it seems like Alcatel may be the next smartphone manufacturer to launch a modular device. According to a report by Hungarian website,, the company is planning to launch a total of five smartphones, one of which will be modular. As per the report, the smartphone will have replaceable backplates, and the website has shared renders of one of them. This particular backplate has an array of LEDs, which will glow in different colours based on the music that the user is listening to, similar to what is seen in JBL’s Pulse speakers. Details about the other backplates is not yet known. As for the phone itself, it is tipped to be powered by an octa-core MediaTek processor and feature a 13MP primary camera. The modular smartphone, as well as the other four devices, are expected to be unveiled at MWC 2017.

The LG G5 and Moto’s Z series are currently the only modular smartphones that are available in the market. However, LG isn’t planning on continuing with the modular design with the G6. LG’s next flagship is expected to have a non-modular design consisting of glass and metal. It is tipped to feature a 5.7-inch QHD display with a 18:9 aspect ratio and may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. The new smartphone is also expected to be the first non-pixel smartphone to come with the Google assistant. LG has already sent out invites for an event on February 26, where it may launch its new flagship.
