Intel has announced a new Bay Trail-T SoC which features a built-in LTE modem (new XMM 7160), unlike other Atom mobile chipsets from the company, finally giving Qualcomm some competition on the integrated chipset front.

The SoC is meant for tablets, and expected to ship in the first devices by the holiday season this year. They are especially suited for 2-in-1 tablets, featuring both Android and Windows, many of which were showcased at the ongoing Computex show.

Based on the recently revealed Silvermont microarchitecture, the 22nm Bay Trail-T SoC will supposedly deliver up to 3x performance increase, and 5x power savings, compared to previous generation of Atom processors. The Bay Trail-T SoCs will be available in up to 8-cores, though the first chipsets are expected to be quad-core. Intel estimates the first Bay Trail-T SoCs will be capable of delivering more than eight hours of battery life on a 10.1-inch tablet, with continuous playback of 1080p HD 30fps video.

For now, details of the GPU onboard the Bay Trail-T SoCs are still unknown. The move to 22nm for its Atom SoCs will also bring a new line-up of smartphone processors, as announced by Intel earlier, codenamed Merrifield, which will only ship in devices by 2014. We can’t wait to get our hands on those devices, though we are still awaiting the latest Clover Trail-based handsets.
