Taxi aggregator Uber has extended its Dial an Uber feature to more cities in India. The new feature enables users to book cabs without the need for downloading the Uber app. It was first launched in August 2016, in four cities — Guwahati, Kochi, Nagpur and Jodhpur has now been rolled out across all 29 Indian cities Uber operates in.

To book a cab using the Dial an Uber service, customers will need to open the dial.uber.com page on their handsets. Once there, users will need to enter their phone number to login or sign-up to request their ride. Uber will then connect users with the available cabs via a phone call for finalising a pickup. On the conclusion of the trip users can pay the driver in cash only.

The company observed that customers using the Dial an Uber service will not be receive receipts or support if they are not using the app. Also cancellations of rides on the feature will cost them a fee, which will be charged on their next trip.

“We began with introducing ‘Dial an Uber’ – an ‘India first Innovation’ in four cities, as a pilot to overcome the challenge of serving under all kinds of networks, especially low or poor connectivity. Buoyed by the overwhelming responses, we are pleased to announce a national roll-out. ‘Dial an Uber’ offers a convenient choice to customers looking to book a ride and is testament to our focus on using our technological edge to make mobility reliable and accessible for everyone,” read a press statement by Apurva Dalal, Head of Engineering, Uber India.
